The newly announced LEGO Smart Play bricks are launching with a huge caveat, though one of them is slightly cheaper than initially advertised.

After months of rumours and leaks, we finally have a first look at LEGO's first Pokémon sets, depicting Pikachu, Evee, Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise in brick form.

The Lego Smart Brick incorporates a silicon chip, copper coils, LEDs and a speaker, and is capable of reacting when it is placed next to other bricks and minifigures.

Simons then moved the Smart Bricks away from the ruler and performed the same trick. Using just a pair of Smart Bricks, he was able to measure the distance between two points in 2D and 3D space. Simons says the bricks can accurately track each other’s position at distances of up to roughly 4 to 5 meters (12–16 feet) away.
